JB’s Shorts: No Legacy is so rich as honesty…William Shakespeare. This goes back to the first tenet of My Mantra. Integrity is grounded in the very essence of honesty.

Honesty is the backbone of your character. Without honesty and trust your character means nothing.

Honesty trust integrity

Integrity– My Moral code of ethics, refusal to lie, steal, or deceive in any way, trustworthiness and incorruptibility
This goes back to my “one person” mantra. If you lie you are no longer one person. You have become different people in the same space. Lie one time and your trustworthiness is gone. Character, bad. Integrity, gone. Honor, gone.
Poof! All in one instant, gone. And for what??? A little bit of time to make an excuse? Figure a way out? The truth always comes out. It may not be today or tomorrow or even in a year but it will and then what?
All that trust equity is gone. Everything you had worked so hard to build up, gone. You don’t believe me? There are dozens of famous preachers who have fallen. Politicians? Look it up. Business leaders, military leaders? All fell down because of lies.
I’ll finish by asking you to always tell the truth no matter the short term pain it might cause. You will come out shining in the long term. If you make a mistake, own it and go on. It’s done then.
Until next time…

I am done with the past. Your past is behind you and your future is out there waiting for you to decide what it will be. Decide now to make your future brighter and higher. Decide now that you want to be a winner and take action to make it happen. Have confidence in yourself, look inward and see your potential even when others don’t.

I am done with the past.

Past process

Make it happen by setting goals. Goals that scare you, that make you stretch, climb and learn.
Make those goals a reality with plans. Smart plans, specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time table.
Make those plans a success with the Process! Plan. Review. Organize. Change. Strive. Success.
Win with Goals, Plans and the Process.

Do you have dreams? Dreams of more money? A better job? Your own business? There is a way to make those dreams come true. You have to turn those dreams into goals. A goal can turn into something tangible that you can latch onto and use to grow into the person you want to be.

Sometimes it’s the crazy things that end being the most valuable and most memorable. Memories don’t happen on the couch and dreams don’t become reality sitting on it. They happen outside your box and off the couch. Dream…

Dream, set goals, make plans and win with the Process.

Dream goals plans

Impossible said pride…my dreams say possible

Risky said experience….my dreams say worth it
Pointless said reason….my dreams say this is crazy
Try said the heart….my dreams say YES!YES!YES!
Go. Make your dreams happen.
Win with Goals, Plans and the Process…

Do you have dreams? Dreams of more money? A better job? Your own business? There is a way to make those dreams come true. You have to turn those dreams into goals. A goal can turn into something tangible that you can latch onto and use to grow into the person you want to be.

However a goal without a plan is just a dream. In order to follow through with your plan, a process must be implemented.

Goals plans process

When you know what you want in life, write it down.
When you write it down, put a date beside it.
Now it’s becoming real. A tangible goal and not just a dream.
Once you have a goal with a date you can start making plans to achieve your goal.
Recognize that goals require a plan to achieve them and the process starts with you writing it down.
The PROCESS I’m talking about is: Plan, Review, Organize, Change, Excel, Strive and Success.
1. Plan. A good plan is a SMART plan. Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time.
◦ Specific-you can’t say “I’m going to lose weight”. You have to say “I’m going to lose 20 pounds”. You can’t say I’m going to make more money. You have to say “I’m going to make 10,000 dollars a month”.
◦ Measurable-there has to be a way of telling if you’re making progress. Progress can be measured in time, levels, dollars, or degrees. Quantify it.
◦ Attainable-be realistic in setting your goals. You should stretch yourself and it should scare you a little but you also have to be able to reach your goal.
◦ Relevant-this goal must fit in with your ultimate plans in life. If you want to be chemist then you don’t want to be taking a journalism class. If your goal is to be a welder then taking fine arts classes isn’t going to help you. Keep your eye on the ultimate goal.
◦ Time-set a date. Have a time table set up with an attainable set of sub goals to achieve on your way towards your ultimate goal.
2. Review. Break up the time frame into sections to review your progress to determine how you’re doing. Do you need to speed up, are you ahead of schedule or are you on track. Make revisions to your schedule as necessary. Modify the sub-goals as necessary to keep you tracking towards the ultimate goal.
3. Organize. Before starting organize your thoughts. Determine what its going to take to complete the plan. Do you need more education? Is a job change necessary? Will financing have to be arranged? Etc. What actions have to be made to accomplish the goal? Get Organized.
4. Change. Get your mind made up that there will be changes necessary. Changes in your attitude. Your attitude is going to be the biggest determinator in the success of your goals. If you don’t believe in yourself, in your success, then you won’t win. You have to believe in it because there are going to be times when it’s tough to go on. When you are going to want to quit. That is why your mind has to be made up before starting. Change your mind set or don’t start.
5. Excel. Remember that you will get knocked down in your journey but that you will get up. You will get up because you set your mind to win. You made the decision before starting that you would persevere through the bad times. When it gets bad you must have the willpower to fight through and be enthusiastic about the fight because you have the mind set of a winner.
6. Strive. Work harder then you have ever worked before. Because you are working hard remember to reward yourself along the way. Take yourself to dinner. Buy some flowers. Take a day off. Then hit it hard again and again and keep hitting it until you break through to the other side.
7. Success. Because on the other side is victory. Your goal is sitting there waiting for you. And you will claim victory over your goal and hold it up like a championship trophy.
You win through the PROCESS. You win because you have a plan and you follow through. You review, organize and change because you want more in life. You excel and strive because of the changes you made in the beginning. And you have success because you followed through with the process.
Be a winner. Set goals big enough to scare you. Make a plan with a set date to accomplish your goals. Then begin the Process of carrying out the plan. Win with the Process. Win

Significance is the fifth tenet of My Mantra. Having, seeing and finding meaning and purpose in all people. Finding inherent value where others might not see it. Do you look for the good in people? Are you developing your own mantra to keep you moving forward and upward? If not then it’s time to start.

Find significance and purpose in all people.

Purpose significance

Having been in business for myself for many years and then in management for a large retail company I have worked with a wide variety of people. Learned a lot from them, sometimes the hard way. Even as hard headed as I can be at times, when I finally absorbed the lessons being taught we were all better off for it.
I say we because when I, being in the lead position, figured out why my coworkers were doing things the way they were an understanding between us grew. A more harmonious workplace developed and relations improved. All because I began not only understanding them better but I started valuing them as people, not as employees.
Significance– seeing and finding worth in all things
Definition of significance by Merriam-Webster
1 a : something that is conveyed as a meaning often obscurely or indirectly
b : the quality of conveying or implying
2 a : the quality of being important : moment
b : the quality of being statistically significant
This led to a win-win situation for us. My finding value in them as people and not employees to be used led them to me valuing our relationship even more.
I began reflecting on how I valued people, how I looked at people as a whole. I began looking around and thinking of how blessed I really was and how easily it would be for me to be the one needing help. I started looking at things through another lens, a lens of introspection and a lens of reversal of places for me and how I would feel.
I didn’t particularly like what I saw in me. I didn’t like that person. So I changed “me”. I changed that day.
The people around me didn’t view the new “me” as the real “me” for some time. I had to prove myself all over again. It took some time, but it was worth it.
It was a very humbling experience for me and a very rewarding one. I was finding value in those around me and wanting them to win and be more.
When someone feels valued, wanted and appreciated they will put more into what they are doing and they will return that value and want more for you in return.
Finding significance in people has led to a better life for me. Not necessarily in monetary terms but in an over-all sense of wellbeing. Being able to connect to the people around by taking an interest in their lives outside of work.
Care for others and find significance in them. It’s a win-win situation.
Next up and the last tenet of My Mantra is Living on Purpose.
